Rex was a loyal canine friend of NYC frit Merchant John E. Stow, who died in 1884. He was a loyal friend and stow wanted his best buddy right next to him, both in life and in death.
The statue was found in the Green-Wood Cemetary, where people visit and leave lots of sticks on his paws, just above where his name is engraved. People do this to show that the dog’s spirit is still alive and he is a good boy that deserves many sticks.
